The oil and gas industry can be hugely lucrative and therefore attractive to companies. After all, the world’s energy needs continue to rise, with a burgeoning global population placing increasing pressure on power supplies. However, as well as providing organisations with the opportunity to generate large sums of money, the industry is also associated with a host of logistical complications.
For example, transporting the relevant resources can prove difficult, and it is of paramount importance that firms use suitable dangerous goods packaging. Luckily for managers, it is now easier than ever to source the packaging supplies.
Demand for these resources may be set to rise among businesses operating in the North Sea oil industry. According to a major new report, an overhaul of the sector could cause oil production in the area to rise by around four billion barrels over coming years. In turn, this may generate an additional £200 billion for the economy.
The independent review was led by Sir Ian Wood. According to the expert, changes to the operation of the oil and gas sector would put the UK in a stronger position to extract almost all of the estimated 24 billion barrels worth of oil that remain beneath the sea.
Sir Ian suggested that a new regulator should be established to oversee the industry and ensure it is managed effectively. His report was commissioned by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and it was based on 80 interviews with companies operating in the North Sea.
The oil tycoon also claimed that fiscal instability in the UK has contributed to the underperformance of the industry.
Responding to the review, Scotland’s energy minister Fergus Ewing said: “The Scottish government are fully behind Sir Ian Wood’s report. We believe it is essential that the recommendations are implemented with speed, and a shadow body be set up rather than await the outcome of primary legislation.
“We share Sir Ian’s view that the industry should finance this body, and since most of the developments in the North Sea and west of Shetland are managed from Aberdeen, Europe’s oil and gas capital, we believe the only conceivable principal location for the new regulatory body is in Aberdeen.”
Mr Ewing went on to remark: “By addressing the challenges facing the industry and harnessing the opportunities, enormous benefits can be reaped by the industry and in tax revenues. This was recognised by the Scottish Government in our Oil and Gas Strategy, published in May 2012 and in our paper ‘Maximising the return from Oil and Gas in an Independent Scotland’ published in July 2013.”
