How to Stay Motivated when Learning to Drive

Keeping You on Track

Everyone knows that learning to drive is often a long process. Progress tends to be gradual, which can make it hard to see how much you have improved compared to your last lesson. Things like long waits for driving tests and having to go back to the drawing board if you fail can also make it really hard to stay motivated. It’s easy to just give up, but you shouldn’t quit if you have come this far!

To help you out, here are some tips on staying motivated, such as choosing a great Colchester driving school.

Write down your reasons for learning

Why do you want to learn to drive? This seems like a really obvious question, but lots of people do struggle to give an answer! For a lot of people, especially if they have just turned 17, learning to drive is just something that is expected of them. That’s not going to keep you motivated, though. Write down a list of reasons why learning to drive matters to you. From freedom to visit your friends when you want to boost your career prospects, it’s different for everyone. Once you have your list, keep it to hand so that you can look at it whenever it feels like the process is getting tough.

Choose a great instructor

It’s easy to just choose the first instructor you find on Google or the one who has the cheapest prices. This might not serve you well in the long run, though! It’s always a good idea to learn with a driving school who have a great reputation in your local area or come recommended by your friends. They will have worked with learners just like you and will be able to keep you motivated much more effectively.

Set some goals

Setting yourself goals is a great way to stay motivated too. We don’t mean just aiming to pass your test. That’s the end goal for everyone! What you should do instead is come up with some goals that are unique to you. Perhaps you want to be able to parallel park with confidence. Maybe you want to be able to identify road signs without having to ask your instructor what they mean. Having smaller goals to work towards is really effective. You can always give yourself a reward for each one you complete, too!

Make sure you have support

Support and encouragement make a huge difference. If you have a friend who is doing lessons at the same time, they can hold you accountable. There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to keep you on track, is there! Your family members can also help. If they know how to drive, they could support you through private practice, which is a great way of building on what you have learnt in your lessons. If you want to find some learners in the same situation, there are some great communities on sites like Facebook or Discord.

What next?

Learning to drive can be hard at times, but you can stay on track with the right attitude and support. Before you know it, your learner driver days will be behind you!
