Our lives are becoming more and more controlled by machines by the day. Rewind decades ago and it was an alarm clock that would ring to wake us up for work. Fast forward to today, and we now have vehicles that can park themselves.
Not all inventions which are designed to automate tasks are necessary or even helpful, but a large portion of them is. Though both very different in their applications, both home and factory automation deliver a load of benefits to their users. Below are just some of the ways in which they can help improve your home and your place of work:
Improvements in Safety
Safety is something that both the homeowner and factory owners and managers, are constantly thinking about. We want our homes and plants to be safe, but it seems like no matter what we do they can never be safe enough.
This is where factory and home automation systems come into play. Let’s look at how these systems can improve the safety of a factory:
- Automated systems will shut off machinery if they detect a foreign object is too close or on a system (such as a finger, arm or a leg)
- Automated systems will alert factory managers and owners if there are any potential problems in the field
- Automated systems will shut off if they become too hot, reducing the chance of sparking or starting a fire (and reducing the chances of the unit overheating and requiring costly repairs)
- Automated systems can be equipped with chips which will be able to read who is and who is not authorized to operate that unit
Home safety relies less on the functioning of systems and more on a more basic level of safety.
- Homeowners can turn their security alarm on and off even when they are not home
- Homeowners can turn the lights on and off as necessary (this is particularly useful if you are away on holiday and wish to make your home appear as if it is being lived in even when it is not)
- Homeowners can turn on televisions, stereo systems, and in some cases even lock their front door all with a swipe and a tap through their smartphone
Improvements in Functionality
Another key benefit to these automated systems is how it improves the functionality of the whole entire system. Unlike systems before, which were designed to do one thing, they are now able to do several others – even without the need of being retrofitted or modified in order to do so.
In a plant, for example, one system which is a “smart” system can be re-programmed to them begin producing another type of product, and scheduled to do so at different times throughout the day. From a homeowner’s perspective, these automated smart systems allow them to be able to have full control over their home while they’re away. If the dog walker needs to stop by at 10 am to take the dogs for a walk, homeowners can set their home alarm system and door lock to be disabled at 9:59am and to then re-engage at 10:05am.
